I don’t know about you, but I work in a very desk based job and in my spare time I love blogging, also very desk based. If you’re like me, how do you get work done and stay healthy at the same time? After being in the workforce for a long time I’ve come up with a few tips for staying healthy at work and I hope they help you too.
7 Tips for Staying Healthy at Work
Making sure your lighting is optimal is really important so you don’t strain your eyes when reading a computer all.the.time.
If you find yourself straining to see your screen or getting headaches at the end of the day try adding some extra light in your work space and see if it helps.
Get up and Walk Around
According to some studies, sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies aren’t really made to be sitting all the time. If you look at our ancient ancestors, they were up, running around, hunting for food and foraging for berries. When it’s really busy and our schedules are crazy, we forget about ourselves and taking care of our bodies.
One really easy way to be healthy at work is to get up off your bum and walk around. Three ways of making sure you do this are:
- Set a timer. I sometimes set a timer on my fitbit to remind me to get up and take a walk. This helps get me out of my busy mindset and let’s me take a moment to just move around and get my blood flowing a bit.
- Make it task specific. If you don’t like the idea of interrupting yourself with a timer, then decide what task or tasks you can do standing up. Each time you need to do that specific task or tasks, do it standing up or walking around. Talking on the phone is a perfect example. No one needs to know you’re walking around your office as you talk.
- Walking meetings. If you have a friend at work who is also trying to get active, suggest that the next time you need to meet you go for a walking meeting. That way you’re moving around and conducting your meeting at the same time.
Don’t Email When you can Visit
This tip goes with the one above. The law school where I work is a pretty big building but I like to try and walk over to see someone if I have a question or need to discuss something. That way I’m getting up and walking around, plus I find it so much nicer to speak in person to my colleagues than to email them all the time.
Drinking water is a part of any healthy living plan including staying healthy at work. Not only does it help you from getting dehydrated but water can keep you more alert.
A few weeks ago I was having terrible neck pain. Some of it is from my son jumping on my neck and shoulders I’m sure but I think the alignment of my desk was also a bit off. Our resident ergonomics expert checked my desk and told me I was completely off. So we fixed it up and ever since I’ve made the adjustments my neck and shoulders feel so much better.
Don’t Drink too Much Coffee
No question, this is a challenge for me. I love my coffee and I drink way too much. I really need to figure out a healthier substitute so I can change this unhealthy habit.
Eat Healthy Snacks and Lunch
My husband does a great job with this one. He’s a big snacker and the snacks are always healthy. He’ll pick up cashews and pistachios along with healthy fruit and cut up veggies.
Bringing lunch is also a great idea not only to help you eat better but to save money as well.
