Hanukkah is one of my favourite Jewish holidays! Hanukkah is the festival of lights and it often takes place around the same time of year as Christmas. Our festival of lights is eight days filled with presents, family and fun. To add that extra bit of celebration why not outfit your home with some gorgeous home decor ideas for Hanukkah!
The Story of Hanukkah
Hanukkah is an 8 day holiday that commemorates the miracle that took place after the destruction of the second temple in Jerusalem.
The story takes place in around 200 B.C. in Israel. The Syrians occupied the land of Israel at the time. In 200 B.C. the holiest site in Jerusalem was the second temple.
Initially, the Syrian king was accepting of the Jewish faith and allowed Jews to practice freely.
However, when a new Syrian king took the throne, he was not as friendly. He ordered the Jewish people to stop practicing their religion. As a part of this decree, the new king ordered the massacre of a large number of Jews along with the destruction of the sacred temple.
Shortly thereafter, a Jewish priest and his five sons led a rebellion against their Syrian oppressors and took back Jerusalem. After winning the battle the remaining Jewish priests cleaned and fixed what was left of the temple. One of the holy items in the temple was a menorah (a gold candelabra) which was to be lit at all times.
The menorah used purified olive oil to create light. This purified oil took eight days to create. Due to the destruction, there was only enough oil to light the menorah for one night. The Hanukkah miracle was that instead of lasting only one day, the oil lasted eight days keeping the menorah lit until the new oil could be purified.
How we Celebrate Hanukkah
To honour the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days, we light candles on our own menorahs, one for each night of the holiday.
We also celebrate by enjoying food made with oil such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly filled donuts). So not only is it a lovely holiday to celebrate with family, but there’s lots of yummy food to eat as well.
