Law students can be a persnickety bunch. They are often perfectionists and type A personalities who work way too much and take very little time to relax. Trust me, I was one and I work with them daily! This pickiness can be a challenge when looking for presents – whether for graduation, holidays, birthdays etc. So I put together a list of some of the best gifts for law students. I hope this list gives you some inspiration when you need to pick up a present for the law student in your life.
To make it even easier for you, I put the ideas into categories:
- stuff for work,
- practical stuff, and
- sentimental gifts
Gifts for Law Students
Most law students have a computer whether a mac or a PC which is a great start. Often students will buy them either at the start of law school or the beginning of their undergraduate studies. By the end of the student’s studies, the computer may have taken a beating.
If the soon to be lawyer you know is struggling with major debt because of school, and your feeling super generous a computer is an amazing and super helpful graduation gift for law students.
Other technology related items, which I’m sure any future lawyer would be grateful to receive include:
When law graduates go to work at their first “law job” they’ll quickly realize it’s very different from school and requires new clothes, new shoes, new bags etc. This stuff can get very expensive very quickly so a gift card to the mall or one of the student’s favourite stores would go a long way.
A briefcase is also a great gift idea for a new lawyer. Shlepping around a ratty knapsack doesn’t necessarily make the cut when you’re working at a law firm.
Briefcases are unisex but sometimes women prefer to use a large purse to carry their work stuff. I have a few great options in my Classic Accessories for Modern Moms post. All of the large totes would work really well for work as well.
For something a bit smaller and less expensive, check out the gifts I mention in my Ultimate Gift Guide for Teachers. All of these options are great for young lawyers as well.
Almost anything can fit into this category. Some great options include a helpful appliance like a coffee maker (I don’t know a lawyer who doesn’t love coffee) or a great blender to make healthy smoothies as they run out the door to go to work in the morning.
Everyone is loving Alexa and google home and these fun “assistants” would be perfect gifts for law students.
Since all law students and young lawyers are always busy, gift cards for services would be welcome presents. You could purchase a gift card to the spa, a meal prep service like Blue Apron or a cleaning service. When you’re on a deal and don’t get home until midnight several days in a row it’s nice to know that your apartment is clean.
I’m a big fan of sentimental gifts. I think this is because my parents would often buy me special gifts for big events. It might be over 20 years old (yikes) but I still use the silver Tiffany key chain my parents bought me for my high school graduation.
Some great professional gift ideas for law students include:
- Cuff links – these cuff links are totally unique, these are awesome, and these are a bit more classic
- Fancy pen (my husband may not agree but I think it’s a classic present that you’ll always have and use)
- Monogrammed keychain
- Gorgeous jewelry – perhaps a pair of diamond earrings, a special bracelet or a simple necklace
- A new watch
There you have it, a number of great gifts for law students and law school graduates. I hope you’ve found some inspiration based on these suggestions!
I’ll be sharing this post at a few of my favourite link ups and link parties!
