It’s the most wonderful time of the year…. yes, it’s back to school! Kids are getting ready to head back to class and parents are stocking up on school supplies. We’re also starting to think about school lunches. Honestly, figuring out what R should have to eat everyday is a stressful experience for me. To reduce my stress levels, I asked a few mom blogger friends for some creative nut free vegetarian school lunches. They totally came through and I’m excited to share these great lunch box ideas with you.
Why nut free and vegetarian you may ask? Well, nut free is a given with all of the major nut allergies impacting our children as of late. R’s school is completely nut free so we have to be very careful.
I choose to give him vegetarian items for lunch because we keep kosher at home. One of the key elements of being kosher is not to eat meat (or poultry) products with dairy. To avoid any potential complications we just tend to give R nut free and vegetarian school lunches.
R’s school is also garbage free. Whatever wrappers you put in to your child’s lunch gets sent back home. Honestly, it’s kind of gross and messy to get used yogurt containers and applesauce packages. To avoid the mess I tend to make all of R’s lunches garbage free by using proper containers.

- Rubbermaid lunch blocks
- 1/2 cup plastic containers (perfect for fruit)
- Ice pack to keep things cool
- Thermos (to keep warm stuff warm)
- Reusable cutlery (my son would love this set)
- Contigo water bottle (R is now using the “big” one rather than the kids size)
- Small containers – we still use these ones as they’re a great size for goldfish or veggie straws and other snacks
Nut Free Vegetarian School Lunches
Vegan Pretzel Dogs from The Baking Fairy
How cute are these vegan pretzel dogs! R would love to have a couple of these in his lunch along with some ketchup for dipping and cucumber and carrot slices. Not sure what to give your child for lunch at school? Here are some amazing nut free and vegetarian school lunch ideas! Click To Tweet
Healthy (and Gluten Free) Uncrustables
I never had regular uncrustables when I was a kid and I don’t think I’d serve them to R. It seems as though they have a lot of unnecessary chemicals plus nuts, which he can’t have at school. This version is simple and healthy.
These 6 ingredient egg cups from Bintu at Recipes from a Pantry are so pretty and have veggies in them. If only R would eat green food other than cucumbers, green grapes and granny smith apples!
Vegan Tuna Salad
This vegan tuna salad (made with a healthy secret ingredient) would be a great addition to our sandwich rotation. After all there are only so many cheese sandwiches a kid can eat during a school year! I wonder if he’d be able to tell that the filling is actually healthy.
I think if I removed the olives I could convince my picky eater to have this delicious looking greek pizza for lunch. I love that it’s made with phyllo dough so it’s a bit different than your typical takeout.
Rainbow Vegetable Tortilla Wraps
I wish R would eat these for lunch! These vegetarian wraps are gorgeous and chock full of healthy vegetables. Perhaps I’ll just take these to work with me!
Lunchables are another “treat” that my mom never gave me for lunch. I’m ok with that seeing the ingredient list. Rebecca over at Strength and Sunshine has created this super healthy version – much better for everyone.
Meatless Meatloaf Muffins
This goes into the category of everything being better in muffin form. These meatless meatloaf muffins look great and are perfect for nut free vegetarian school lunches.
This is one of our favourite recipes at home. It’s comfort food at it’s best with a healthy twist. The addition of broccoli, cauliflower and/or kale is a huge bonus in my mind.
Vegetarian & Nut Free Snacks & Dessert
In addition to the main dish you also need to include some yummy treats to make your nut free vegetarian school lunches well rounded. Here are some fun ideas to try on the snack side of things.
Allergen Free Protein Balls
A great choice for busy kids and those who play sports after school or do other fun activities. These little balls are a great protein boost for the mid afternoon.
Carrot Cake Balls
For those of you who may not like chocolate, or whose kids might not like chocolate (like my son), these carrot cake snack balls are a great solution. Easy to make, healthy and easy to transport they look like a fantastic snack.
If you kid loves potato chips, maybe he’ll like beet chips as well! That’s my hope at least :). These healthy beet chips from Pink Fortitude might just do it.
Banana Everything Cookies
We can’t forget dessert! These banana everything cookies from Dinner-Mom are perfect for dessert or snack.
I hope these ideas help solve the question of what to pack for a vegetarian and nut free school lunch. If you have any go to lunch ideas for kids please let me know in the comments! I’m sure everyone would benefit for having additional packed lunch ideas (I know my son sure would appreciate it lol)
