Does this sound like you: the back of your car is full of stuff – sports equipment, tap shoes, extra towels, bug spray and blankets. Your purse isn’t really a purse, it’s a massive bag full of your kids’ stuff – toys, books, diapers, wipes, snacks…
If you’re like me, hauling all of this stuff around all the time, wouldn’t it be useful to have a list of summer must haves for moms? Well, look no further…
The Ultimate List of Summer Must Haves for Moms
Here’s what we either used to keep around at all times (when R was a baby) or what we use almost daily now that he’s older.
Since, as moms, we are more than just schleppers for our kids, I’ve split the list into three categories:
- The park
Summer Must Haves for Moms – For the Park, Sports Games, Amusement Parks etc.

When R was a baby we would never leave home without:
- Poop bags
- Hand sanitizer
- Water bottle
- Light blanket
- Stroller with decent sun coverage
Now that R is a bit older, the sunscreen, hat, water and snacks still apply but we’ve also added a few more items to our list.
A place to sit
If your child plays any outdoor sports, these folding chairs are must haves. We bought ours last year and we are so happy that we did. Now when the ground is muddy due to all of the rain we’ve had lately, we just pull out our chairs and sit. Also, these chairs have cup holders – perfect for the morning coffee 🙂
Friends of ours have this amazing waterproof blanket. It’s huge and perfect for the beach, a picnic or the park. It’s also a great item to have on hand if your kids are still small and crawling around. Rather than crawling all over the grass or mud, they can just stay on the blanket.

Both the fold up chairs and waterproof blanket are great things to keep in the car for whenever you might need them.
We don’t tend to have too many picnics or meals outside, but whenever we do, a sturdy cooler bag and ice pack are really useful.
The other day I was on “snack duty” for my son’s soccer team. The league has specific rules around which snacks are acceptable and based on the guidelines, we brought string cheese and clementines. It was a super hot day and boy was I happy that I had our cooler bag and ice packs to keep the fruit and cheese cold while the kids played.
Summer Must Haves For Moms – At Home
If you’re lucky and live on a farm or huge grassy property your kids probably don’t need too many extra outdoor toys since they can just run around and have fun.
Since we live in the city and our yard isn’t very big, we’ve bought a few fun outdoor toys over the past several years that R and his friends have really enjoyed.
I think the Little Tykes Soccer Net would be number one on our list. We’ve had it for several years now and it always comes out of the garage, every time we go outside to play.
A close runner up is the Little Tykes Basketball Net. R started using inside when he started walking, but as he got bigger we moved it outdoors. Now that he’s too big for this basketball net, we have to think about investing in one of the larger ones so he can shoot baskets whenever he wants.
When R was little, he loved his water table. It didn’t matter if the water was freezing he’d still get his little hands in there, splash around with the boats and get soaked (and in the process drench me as well).
My niece has this awesome bouncy castle that’s small enough to set up in your backyard for lots of playdate fun.

Finally, my mother in law bought us this plastic picnic table that we use for outdoor art. When you’re working on a super messy art project with toddlers it’s best to do it outside. This table makes it easy – it’s plastic and simple to clean.
Summer Must Haves For Moms – For You
When I spend a lot of time outside in the summer I have few necessities:
- Comfortable and relaxed clothing made of natural fabrics like linen and cotton. Not only are these fabrics cooler to wear in hot weather, but they are easy to clean. You also don’t have to worry if they get wrinkled.
- A wide brimmed hat to block the sun.
- Good facial sunscreen
- Large sunnies
- Big water bottle
Ever since my thyroid surgery I’ve had trouble regulating my temperature. I tend to lean towards being very hot all the time so cool clothes, a hat and water bottle are key to ensure my comfort outside.
Did I miss any summer must haves for moms? What’s on your list?
